About gelcoat... Gelcoat is a polyester based material that makes up the outer shell of fiberglass boats and yachts. It can be clear or blended with a variety of pigments that does not require painting. Modern fiberglass boats are built in a mold coated with resin that allows easy removal of the finished boat. When the mold is prepared, the gelcoat is sprayed over the entire surface. Next, a layer of fiberglass mixed with polyester resin is added to the mold to cover the gelcoat layer. The process is finalized with a chopper gun which mixes the fiberglass mat and polyester resin in the correct proportions. The two must be properly bonded in order to prevent future problems with the boat. Finally, a resin coated cloth is placed on top to complete the "lay-up". Gelcoat repairs require special attention. Over the years, gelcoats may weather and fade. Matching the gelcoat is a time consuming job that requires expert skills. The boat below suffered damage to its gelcoat from hitting a dock. As you can see by the finish, the boat is like new.
